Midwife examining pregnant woman

Midwifery not only involves the care of pregnant, labouring and postnatal women and their newly-born babies, but also encompasses preventative health care and health education. The midwife’s role is a responsible but rewarding one which requires empathy, understanding, knowledge and skill.

Midwifery is a very attractive career option. The Midwifery programmes at the University of Stirling prepare you to become competent, autonomous professionals able to deliver care to the highest standards. As well as the intrinsic rewards of the job, graduates of the Midwifery programmes are awarded a professional and academic qualification. Following graduation you will have the opportunity to go on to further study and add to the body of midwifery knowledge.

Integrated Programme

From September 2009 the Department of Nursing and Midwifery offers an Integrated programme which aims to provide students with the opportunity to undertake the BSc Hons/BSc Midwifery either via the 3 Year route or the Shortened route. Both routes are accessible on Stirling and Highland (Inverness) campuses.

Three Year Route

This is a three-year (156 weeks’ full-time) programme. There is one intake per year, commencing in September. This programme is suitable for those who wish to pursue midwifery as a career and who do not already hold a nursing qualification.

The three-year midwifery programme is student-centred with an emphasis on self-directed learning from Year 1. You are fully supported with a personal tutor throughout the programme. The practice to theory ratio is no less than 50 percent practice and no less than 40 percent theory.

Each year has three 15-week trimesters comprising both theory and practice (one module per trimester).   From an early stage you’ll have an opportunity to access clinical areas and develop clinical skills under the supervision of experienced midwives.

Teaching and Assessment

A range of assessment strategies is used to assess midwifery knowledge, skills and attitude. Academic assessments include written examinations, essays and reports.  Clinical practice is assessed on a continual basis and counts towards the academic award.

The programme enables you to develop the essential skills and abilities required to achieve the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards of Proficiency to register as a midwife. Communication skills, analytical and research skills are just some of the lifelong learning skills the midwifery student develops in order to function in a multiprofessional and multicultural environment.

Clinical Practice

You will get the opportunity to practice in a range of settings, including the community and hospital. Mentors (experienced midwives) are assigned to support and guide you. You will generally follow the shift pattern of your mentor in order to maximise continuity of clinical supervision. There are varying shift patterns but these may include nights and weekends.

18 month route (Shortened Programme)

This 18 month (78 weeks’ full-time) programme. There will be one intake per year, commencing in March. This programme is designed for those who are already registered with the NMC as a Registered Nurse (Adult). The practice to theory ratio is no less than 50 percent practice and no less than 40 percent theory.  You will study alongside students on the 3 Year route from module two to module 6.

The programme enables you to develop the essential skills and abilities required to achieve the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards of Proficiency to register as a midwife. It is designed to produce an autonomous practitioner committed to meeting the holistic needs of the childbearing woman and her family.

Student support is achieved by a tripartite system of teacher, student and mentor. This system is essential in helping you to develop NMC standards of proficiency. UCAS code B721.

Clinical practice is available in the community, hospital and integrated nursing/midwifery services. You will have the opportunity to develop midwifery skills in low-risk and high-risk antenatal and postnatal areas, community, labour suite and neonatal units.

Teaching and Assessment

A range of assessment strategies is used to assess midwifery knowledge, skills and attitude. Academic assessments include written examinations, essays and reports, while there is continuous assessment of your performance and ability in clinical practice.

Teaching and learning strategies reflect the student-centred approach. From the outset, you're encouraged to identify your own learning needs.   Clinical practice is assessed on a continual basis and counts towards the academic award.
