Undergraduate Study
How to Apply
This page discusses the University's application procedure and entrance requirements necessary to study nursing and midwifery courses. Please see 'post-registration' below for programmes suitable for registered nurses, and 'pre-registration' for non registered nurses. For full details of what is offered in the programmes please see the study nursing and study midwifery pages.
You should apply for ‘top-up’ degree programmes, or modules taken on a standalone basis, direct to the University, regardless of which campus you’ll be studying at. Ask our Undergraduate Admissions Office for an application form.
You’ll normally need to meet the University’s minimum requirements for nursing programmes or midwifery programmes:
Other qualities and interests are carefully considered through your personal statement. Explaining why you’re choosing a programme is essential and your knowledge of and interest in Nursing or Midwifery and the branch you are applying for should be displayed. Voluntary or paid experience in a care setting is strongly recommended.
References are also considered. Give an academic reference if possible, but failing this, an employer’s reference. Friends as referees are not usually accepted.
You must be committed to practice placements anywhere in the local Health Board area where you’re studying. You should also be aware that holiday periods are pre-determined within the programme.
Yes, for all applicants. You’ll need to discuss two or three related topics, which we’ll tell you about when we invite you for an interview.
All applicants are subject to a Criminal Records check. Previous criminal convictions need not exclude you, but all convictions must be declared and some offences may result in an unsuccessful application. For Nursing/Midwifery professions there is no such thing as a ‘spent’ conviction. Also, admonished cases or cases which do not come to court may be investigated.
All applicants must be passed fit by Occupational Health. This will require a questionnaire and also a personal visit to the campus in addition to the interview.
To protect your privacy, neither of these checks will normally be carried out until an offer has been made.
Absolutely. There are Applicant Days specifically designed for Nursing & Midwifery students. You will be told of these when you receive your interview date.
Unlike some other Scottish universities’ BSc/Diplomas, we only have one intake each year in September.
Applications for Nursing and Midwifery will be made through UCAS for entry in academic year 2010/11, regardless of the qualifications you have got or what you are studying, and no longer through CATCH.
For further information on how to apply through UCAS please view our UCAS webpages.
All overseas applicants to the nurses or midwives parts of the register must complete and provide evidence of the British Council International English Language Test (IELTS) before submitting their application to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
This applies to all applications, regardless of the campus applied to.
If you have a disability, please make early contact with us. We will arrange an informal interview to explain the requirements of the programme and show you residential accommodation and study facilities, so you can see where you might need assistance in order to meet the programme requirements. Contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office for further discussion of your needs.
