I owe a lot to the lecturers for giving me a solid foundation on which to build my career.

'I first came to Stirling in 1995 to study for an Environmental Science Degree and found myself drawn to study Mathematics. When I finished my Maths degree, I thought I would try pastures new and headed to Glasgow to study for an MSc. Although that was a good experience, I returned to Stirling in 2001 to study for my PhD in Mathematics. I think I was homesick for the beautiful surroundings and familiar faces and just the general environment and friendliness of the University – to me, it was like returning home.
The Computing Science and Mathematics Department is active, with a lively seminar series. During my time as a research student, I attended various conferences, both at home and abroad. Stirling is a great place to study – the campus is one of the prettiest in the country. I have made friends with people from all over the world, with whom I still keep in contact. There is a great social life, with various clubs, societies and a PhD Society. You can also do a bit of undergraduate teaching, which helps subsidise your grant and gives you the chance to be on the opposite side of the desk.
I completed my PhD in September 2004 and now work as a Senior Analyst for HBOS, applying the knowledge I gained from my PhD and also utilising the research and presentational skills developed through my studies. I owe a lot to the lecturers in the Computing Science and Mathematics Department for giving me a solid foundation on which to build my career.'
