Part-time Employment

Opportunities Available

UK and other European Union students have no limit on weekly working hours, although overseas (non-EU) students are only permitted to work up to 20 hours per week. In the past, students have obtained jobs in restaurants, bars and shops with the hourly wage averaging around £5 per hour. Although around 75 percent of the University's students have part-time jobs, the type of job you can get may depend on a number of factors including your study commitments, proficiency in English and willingness to work unsocial hours etc. It is important to remember, however, that you may not be able to work more than about 10 hours per week (especially if you are enrolled on a taught Master's programme) due to academic commitments, and you should not rely on income from a part-time job.

The Job Shop within the Career Development Centre of the University has details about part-time vacancies both on campus and in Stirling and is a useful place to start looking for work.

Teaching Assistantships

Some Departments may offer teaching assistantships for research students in return for undertaking part-time teaching duties and such students will receive a stipend to support them in their studies. The amount of teaching will not normally exceed six hours per week. Further information is available from each Department.
